The Challenge
The Classic Christmas Hamper is a long-standing favourite within Todhunter’s Costco collection, retailing at a considered £99.99 price point.
Positioned as a premium Christmas gift, it has built a strong reputation over the years and is particularly popular with corporate customers looking for a high-quality, ready-to-gift hamper packed with trusted food and drink brands.
As a well-established Costco staple with a loyal customer base, expectations are always high and consistency key.
However, maintaining this recently presented a significant challenge for Alexir Gifting…
The hamper was expected to remain at the same £99.99 price point, while continuing to offer the same number of products and standard of food and drink customers had come to expect. Any reduction in quantity or perceived quality risked impacting customer confidence and the hamper’s long-standing success. However, substantial year-on-year cost increases across food and drink categories placed pressure on the project.
Alongside this, rising supplier costs threatened the ability to maintain the premium contents and presentation of the hamper within the fixed retail price. This made it increasingly difficult to deliver the same level of value.
Consequently, we needed to explore wider sourcing options and enter deeper negotiations with suppliers without compromising the quality or appeal of the finished hamper.
Requirements:
The Solution
We took a proactive and strategic approach to sourcing and supplier management. This meant broadening our sourcing network to secure cost-effective, premium alternatives and re-evaluating the product mix to preserve quality, variety and perceived value.
At the same time, we strengthened negotiations with existing suppliers to maintain stable pricing and introduced new suppliers where necessary to help offset rising ingredient costs. We also ensured that all of Costco’s strict quality and compliance standards were met throughout the process.
When it came to the design and development of the hamper, we focused on maintaining the premium quality and appeal customers expected.
The bespoke black woven wicker basket provided the foundation and was beautifully finished with premium leather straps to reinforce the traditional, elegantly crafted feel. After reviewing Christmas trends, we refined the design to draw on rich, classic festive colours that felt timeless and universally appealing. As a hamper designed to suit a broad customer base, the colourway, finishes and product selection were chosen with wide appeal in mind.
Despite rising food and drink costs, we managed to maintain the same quality, item count and overall value of the hamper after careful sourcing and supplier negotiations.
The contents therefore captured the essence of Christmas all in one basket. Two bottles of Bottega Millesimato fizz set the tone, complemented by red and white wines from the Volunte vineyards. Traditional festive favourites, including a rich fruited Christmas pudding from Coles Bakery, luxury mince pies from Grandma Wild’s, and an array of savoury nibbles and cheeseboard accompaniments completed the hamper ready to be shared and enjoyed throughout the festive season.
The result
We successfully delivered the project at the same price point and with no reduction in quality. This meant we maintained the full item count and the classic selection customers expected, which protected its reputation as a reliable, great-value, high-volume corporate gift, despite the challenging cost-conditions. Overall, the finished hamper was more than just a gift; it was a celebration of the season’s finest flavours and delights.
